Are You Eligible to Apply For Citizenship?

What do you need to apply for Portuguese Citizenship?

  • Have at least 5 years of legal residency：we can either submit all of your residence permits issued within this period or a certificate “Certidão de Contagem de Tempo”, issued by AIMA (Agency for Integration Migration and Asylum).  it’s possible that they’ll state that the start date of their legal residence is earlier than the one from the card.
  • Valid passport
  • Valid Portuguese resident card
  • Birth certificate
  • No criminal records
  • Passed the Portuguese Ciple A2 level exam or Completed a recognized Portuguese A2 level course 

You can take a 150-hour Portuguese course to replace the A2 Ciple exam.  It is the chosen path nowadays (this was only introduced last year) for most people.  

Why We Think A2 Portuguese Course Is The Better Way To Go:

The A2 Portuguese course has many advantages over the exam in terms of time, money, flexibility, resources, and certainty of achievement. 

  • Exam centre are only available in certain cities, you may not have an exam centre near you
  • Exam schedule are only available sparingly, some cities may have only 2 – 3 exam schedule per year
  • Exam slots are very tight, and often need to be booked months ahead of time
  • There is no guarantee you will pass the exam, if you fail, you will need to take the exam again
  • In order to pass the exam, you will need to have a good foundation of Portuguese.  This normally takes far more than 150 hours (more likely 400 hours)
  • If you fail the exam, it may take one year to get another appointment for the next available exam in / near where you reside.  (Repeating this a few times mean it may take you several years to get this necessary document to apply for your citizenship)
  • The stress of an exam vs peace of mind is invaluable
