Apply a Portuguese tax ID (NIF) remotely

The Portuguese tax ID, NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is a crucial requirement for most activities in Portugal.

Obtaining an NIF doesn’t imply tax liability in Portugal, especially for income earned outside the country, if you don’t live in Portugal (thus a non-tax resident).

You can acquire your NIF well in advance of your visa application, even months or years before. It’s advisable to obtain it as early as possible.

We handle all the documentations necessary for the application for you.

What’s more, the first year’s tax representative is already included in the fees.

Declare tax/ non-tax resident

When you relocate to Portugal and spend more than 183 days in a given year here, it is essential to transition your tax status to become a tax resident. As a tax resident, you are obligated to report your worldwide income

likewise, if you decide to leave Portugal or no longer remain in the country for over 183 days, it is necessary to declare yourself as a non-tax resident. In this status, you are not subject to taxation on your global income.

We are here to assist you in declaring your tax or non-tax residence status. In the case of non-tax residence, we will act as your tax representative, and the fees already cover the first year of tax representation services!

Change Portuguese tax ID (NIF) representative

In Portugal, a NIF tax representative, often referred to as a Fiscal Representative (Representante Fiscal), plays a vital role, particularly for non-resident individuals and entities. The primary responsibilities of a tax representative in Portugal include:

Communication with Tax Authorities: The tax representative acts as an intermediary between you and Portuguese tax authorities. We handle all communication, queries, and payment notifications from tax authorities on behalf of the non-resident.

Representation for Non-Resident Real Estate Owners: For non-resident property owners in Portugal, the tax representative ensures that all property-related taxes and obligations, such as IMI (Municipal Property Tax) and IMT (Property Transfer Tax), are met and properly managed.

We can represent you as your NIF representative.

NHR Non-Habitual Resident Declaration

Current lead time: 1 week

To qualify for the non-habitual resident tax regime in Portugal, you must meet specific criteria.

– You have stayed in Portugal for more than 183 days during the relevant year or if, by December 31 of that year, you have a place you intend to use as your habitual residence in Portugal.
– Additionally, you should not have been taxed as tax residents in Portugal during the five years preceding their change of tax residence to Portugal.

Under this regime, income from “high added value activities” earned by non-habitual residents is subject to a fixed 20% tax rate.

The law also provides for tax exemptions for income from foreign sources under specific conditions. Income from work related to high added value activities, property income, interest, dividends, and other investment income are typically exempt from tax in Portugal.

Pensions earned by individuals are subject to a 10% autonomous tax rate.

These benefits apply for ten consecutive years, provided that the individual continues to meet the criteria for tax residency each year.

To apply for registration as a non-habitual resident, you must first register as tax residents in Portuguese territory. The application for non-habitual resident status must be submitted by March 31 of the year following the individual’s registration as a tax resident in Portugal.

We can help you to declare the non-habitual residence status (NHR).
