Portugal Golden Visa for U.S. citizens

Keep your U.S. life. Build a Portuguese residence option for your family.

Portugal’s Golden Visa (ARI) offers qualifying Americans and eligible family members a route to Portuguese residence through a qualifying investment, without requiring a full-time move. ARI holders may later apply for permanent residence or Portuguese citizenship, subject to the requirements in force at the time. Start by checking whether the investment, residence plan, and timeline fit your family.

Decide before you enquire

Get the questions that change the decision out of the way first

The most useful first step is not a sales call. It is knowing whether the current route matches your assets, U.S. life, and long-term expectations.

Property

Can I qualify by buying a home?

No. Buying a home in Portugal does not qualify for the Golden Visa. You can still purchase property for personal use, but it remains separate from the qualifying investment and residence application. If buying a home remains part of your personal plan, explore Portugal properties for sale.

Retirement assets

Can I use an IRA or 401(k)?

Possibly. A self-directed IRA may work through a willing custodian; a 401(k) depends on the plan and may require an eligible rollover. The custodian, fund, and a qualified U.S. adviser should confirm the structure before any money moves.

Tax residence

Will the Golden Visa make me tax resident?

No—not by itself. Portugal generally treats you as tax resident if you spend more than 183 days there in a relevant 12-month period or maintain a home as your habitual residence. U.S. tax filing rules still apply, so plan cross-border tax before relocating.

After five years

What are my options after five years?

After five years of Golden Visa temporary residence, you may continue renewing or compare Golden Visa permanent residence, ordinary permanent residence, and EU long-term resident status, subject to each route’s requirements. Citizenship follows a separate timetable and, for most U.S. citizens, generally requires at least 10 years of legal residence. Compare the options after five years.

The Golden Visa may deserve a closer look if

You want residence without rebuilding your life around a move

  • You expect to keep your primary home and career in the United States
  • You are comfortable considering the €500,000 eligible fund route
  • You can work with a long, government-led process rather than a guaranteed timetable

Compare another route first if

Your real goal is relocation—or your plan depends on certainty

  • You expect to live in Portugal most of the year and may be better served by a relocation visa
  • You need a Portuguese home purchase to qualify for residence
  • You require guaranteed timing, investment liquidity, returns, or citizenship

How do you want Portugal to fit into your life?

Know the commitment

If the result points to a Golden Visa, understand what that means

The qualifying investment is only one part of the decision. Family size, fund terms, government fees, and the work needed to prepare the case all affect the plan.

Fund investment route

Invest through an eligible Portuguese fund

€500,000 minimum

The fund route does not require you to run a business or relocate to Portugal. A professional manager handles the underlying portfolio. Eligibility, investment risk, liquidity, and redemption terms must each be reviewed separately.

Plan for four cost categories

  • Qualifying investment€500,000 subscribed into an eligible fund.
  • Government feesApplication, residence-card, and renewal fees for each applicant.
  • Professional supportLegal and coordination work across the application and renewals.
  • Third-party expensesFund or custodian fees, records, apostilles, banking, transfers, and translations where relevant.

Application timeline

From deciding to proceed to your first residence card

The steps you prepare can be coordinated in advance. AIMA controls the timing of its review, biometrics appointments, approval, and card issuance.

Straight answers

The questions U.S. visitors ask before they enquire

Property, retirement assets, citizenship, tax residence, and timing come first because they most often change the route decision.

Can I qualify by buying a home in Portugal?

No. You do not need Portuguese residence to buy property in Portugal, but ownership and immigration status are separate. Buying property does not by itself grant a residence permit, and direct or indirect real-estate investment is not a qualifying Golden Visa route under current rules.

Can I use an IRA or 401(k) for the fund route?

Some U.S. applicants explore self-directed retirement structures. Whether this is workable depends on the account, custodian, qualifying investment documentation, and case-specific U.S. tax and retirement-law advice.

Can an American apply for Portuguese citizenship after five years?

Not under the nationality law effective 19 May 2026. Most U.S. citizens now need at least 10 years of legal residence, counted from the date the first residence card is issued, before they can apply. Language, culture, civic, subsistence, criminal-record, and other requirements also apply. Permanent residence may be available after five years of temporary residence, subject to its own requirements. Citizenship is never automatic. Read our 2026 Portugal nationality law update.

Does a Golden Visa make me a Portuguese tax resident?

Not automatically. Immigration residence and tax residence are separate legal questions. Days in Portugal, available housing, treaty rules, and other personal facts can matter. Consult qualified U.S. and Portuguese tax advisors.

How long will the application take?

Document preparation, financial-provider checks, completion of the fund subscription, AIMA processing, and biometrics each follow a different timeline. We provide a stage-by-stage estimate and update it as your case progresses, but government appointment and decision dates cannot be guaranteed.

Is Portugal’s Golden Visa still open to Americans in 2026?

Yes. The program remains available to qualifying non-EU nationals, including U.S. citizens. The available routes changed in October 2023, but the program itself did not close.

Do I need to live in Portugal?

No full-time move is required. The minimum stay is generally 14 days per two-year period. The stay requirement begins only after the first card is issued; biometrics and other process visits are separate.

Can my spouse, children, or parents be included?

Eligible family members may apply together. For Golden Visa families, qualifying adult children can remain included beyond age 18 if they are unmarried, studying, and financially dependent; dependent parents of either spouse may also qualify. Portuguese law also provides a path to an autonomous residence permit, so a child’s status does not have to remain tied to the main applicant indefinitely.

Can I exit the investment after five years?

The qualifying investment is generally maintained for at least five years. After five years of temporary residence, you may be eligible to apply for permanent ARI residence, subject to requirements including basic Portuguese. This permanent ARI framework preserves special flexibility around time outside Portugal. We generally recommend waiting until permanent residence has been granted before exiting. Once that permanent permit is in place, the investment is no longer the basis of the status; any fund redemption remains subject to the fund’s own terms.
